Celosia argentea, also known as cockscomb is a species of erect perenials with oval to lance-shaped dark purple-green leaves to 6 " in length and bearing deep red flowerheads. They are traditionally found in tropical and subtropical Asia, Africa, North Central, and South America.The attain a heoght of 18' at maturity and serve well as border plants or can be used as cut flowers. They are grown under glass in most soil-based potting soils in full sun and good ventilation.They may be grown outdoors in moderately fertile soil and full sunlight and should be watered freely during the hot summer months. They may be grown from seed at 64ºF, from early to late spring.They are prone to foot and root rot, and fungal leaf diseases, as well as spider mites,white flies, and aphids.
