Conservation is one of the most important issues that faces us today. Without cocerted effort to conserve existing species, we not only stand to lose the natural beauty of the outdoor habitats, but we also stand a good chance of upsetting the ecological balance of nature.

With the fast urbanization and destruction of many of our natural areas to make way for new high rise buildings, parking lots, shopping malls, and of course freeways, these habitats face a dismal future with many species facing extinction. Some people may show little care or concern if we lose a few hundred or thousand species here and there. These same people however are the first ones to complain about a climate change such as increased temoeratures or lack of rain. These people are also spending much time lately talking about the ozone depletion and rapid increase in the CO2levels, and air quality. What they haven't considered is the fact that they are experiencing the effects of a trade off of natural areas for that of urbanization.

These are a few of the many reasons for concern and for the urgent revival of conservation. While we don't want to endorse a cessation in modernization, we do endorse the preservation of our natural areas such as state and national parks, and natural refuges and forest areas. Many would ask what can be done to accomodate conservation and modernization at the same time.

A few suggestions might include the distribution of wildflower seed which are native to a particular region along its highways through the countryside. The increase in landscaped areas around freeway interchanges within the cities is another alternative. There also is the possibility of adding narrow strips of landscaping between rows of cars in strip or shopping areas. Imagine how much green space could be added to high rise buildings with the addition of patios and planters. These are but a few suggestions that could be put forth for increasing our green space and which could also be utilized for conservation of endangered or threatened species.

Botresearch USA is very concerned about the preservation and conservation of our natural resources and the plant species that are part of it. It is because of this concern that we are using our knowledge of horticultural and biotechnological techniques to set up a protected site in which we will harbor not only those species of Lamiaceae plants which are the basis of our research, but also any other plant specie that we are called upon to help preserve. We are currently working to uncover the methods of mass producing these species via in vitro micropropagation or tissue culture. By using these methods we can maximize the quantity of a specie produced without significant reduction in the size of the natural population. Our plans call for the utilization of university students throughout the world to re-distribute these produced materials, in the form of seedlings or seed, back into their natural habitat or into protected areas near their natural habitat.
